No Distribution of New Notes During This Year's Dashain; Only Clean Notes to Circulate

Nepal Rastra Bank has decided not to distribute new notes during this year's Dashain festival. Instead, the central bank will only circulate clean notes.

Key Highlights:

  • Suspension of New Note Distribution: Nepal Rastra Bank, which typically distributes new notes targeting festivals every year, has decided not to do so this Dashain.

  • Arrangement for Clean Note Exchange: Clean notes that were circulated in the market a year ago and returned will be arranged for exchange through banks.

  • Change in Distribution System: In the past, new notes were printed and stored 3-4 months in advance for distribution. This time, with the discontinuation of the exchange of new notes, this policy is expected to continue in the coming years as well.

  • Previously Set Exchange Limits: Previously, Nepal Rastra Bank allowed an exchange facility of NPR 18,500 per person and up to NPR 61 million per bank in notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 rupees. This time, the exchange of clean notes will be organized with set limits for both small and large denominations.

This new decision by Nepal Rastra Bank has brought changes to the practice of exchanging new notes during Dashain, which is likely to continue in the future.
