Nepal Fully Implements Interest Rate Corridor Structure: A Detailed Analysis
Nepal Fully Implements Interest Rate Corridor Structure for Liquidity Management: A Deep Dive Analysis Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has marked a pivotal shift in its monetary policy operations by fully implementing the Interest Rate Corridor (IRC) framework starting from February 2024 (Fagun 2080 BS). This reform aims to enhance liquidity management, anchor short-term interest rates, and drive stable and sustainable economic growth. Nepal’s journey toward modern liquidity management has been long and gradual. Initially, monetary policy tools were non-existent. After the establishment of NRB in 1956 (2013 BS), early efforts focused on currency issuance, banking system support, and exchange rate stability.

Gold Price Surge in Nepal: Causes, Impacts, and Future Outlook
Gold Price Surge in Nepal: Causes, Impacts, and Future Outlook The price of gold in Nepal has been shattering records, reaching unprecedented heights and sparking widespread discussion about its economic and cultural implications. On April 22, 2025 (Vaisakh 9, 2082), the price of hallmark gold per tola (11.66 grams) soared to nearly NPR 200,000, before slightly declining to NPR 190,400 by Wednesday, April 23, 2025. This volatility, with daily fluctuations of NPR 5,000–7,000, reflects a global trend driven by geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, and shifting currency dynamics. However, the soaring prices are reshaping Nepal’s domestic market, reducing demand for gold jewelry, increasing public selling, and impacting government revenue.

Recent government surveys suggest the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stands at approximately NPR 5.7 trillion (around USD 43 billion), with the agriculture sector — which includes forestry and fisheries — contributing around 24% of that figure. However, analysts note that despite these figures, structural and administrative inefficiencies continue to impede broad-based economic advancement.

Non-Performing Loans of Commercial Banks Reach 4.83% in Q3 of FY 2081/82 Kathmandu, Chaitra End, 2081 — In the third quarter (end of Chaitra) of the current fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25), the average non-performing loans (NPL) of commercial banks in Nepal have reached 4.83%. This marks an increase of 1.18 percentage points compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year 2080/81 (2023/24), when the average NPL stood at 3.65%. The rise in NPLs is attributed to economic pressures, stagnation in new loan disbursements, delays in the sale of non-banking assets, and intensifying competition among banks. These factors have collectively strained the banking sector, leading to a deterioration in asset quality.
