The government has included provisions for the commercial production of cannabis in the latest budget announcement. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Barshaman Pun, while presenting the budget for the fiscal year, declared that legal arrangements will be made for the commercial production of cannabis.
Until now, the legal framework has only permitted the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes. Cannabis cultivation and usage as a narcotic have been subject to law enforcement action. However, this time the government has specified in the budget that legal provisions will be established to facilitate the commercial farming of cannabis.
This move is expected to pave the way for a new agricultural industry in Nepal, potentially boosting the economy and creating job opportunities. By legalizing and regulating cannabis cultivation, the government aims to explore its economic benefits while ensuring proper control and management.
The inclusion of cannabis in the budget reflects a significant shift in policy, aiming to tap into the global cannabis market, which has seen substantial growth in recent years. The government’s decision indicates a progressive approach towards the utilization of cannabis beyond medicinal uses, recognizing its potential as a lucrative agricultural commodity.
