विश्व फुटबलको सबैभन्दा ठूलो उत्सव फिफा विश्वकपको २३औँ संस्करण आज औपचारिकरूपमा पर्दा उठ्दैछ। यसपटकको आयोजना आफैँमा ऐतिहासिक छ — पहिलोपटक एकै साथ तीन राष्ट्र अमेरिका, क्यानडा र मेक्सिकोले मिलेर यो महाकुम्भ आयोजना गर्दैछन्। त्यस्तै यसअघि ३२ टोलीमा सीमित रहेको प्रतियोगिता यसपटक थप विस्तार भई ४८ टोलीसहित खेलिन लागेको छ, जुन विश्वकपको इतिहासमै नयाँ अध्याय हो।
उद्घाटन खेलमा सह-आयोजक मेक्सिको र दक्षिण अफ्रिका आमनेसामने हुनेछन्। मेक्सिको सिटी स्टेडियममा नेपाली समयअनुसार राति १२ बजेर ४५ मिनेटमा सुरु हुने यो खेल समूह 'ए' अन्तर्गत पर्छ। उल्लेखनीय के छ भने यी दुवै टोली सन् २०१० को विश्वकप उद्घाटन खेलमा पनि एकअर्काविरुद्ध भिडेका थिए र त्यो खेल १–१ गोलको बराबरीमा सकिएको थियो।
मेक्सिकोका लागि यो १८औँ विश्वकप सहभागिता हो। सन् १९९४ यता उसले विश्वकपको पहिलो खेलमा पराजयको मुख देखेको छैन र हालसम्म कुल ६० खेल खेलिसकेको छ। यद्यपि उपाधि भने अझै उसको हातमा परेको छैन, उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन घरेलु मैदानमा भएका सन् १९७० र १९८६ को क्वाटरफाइनल हो। अर्कोतर्फ दक्षिण अफ्रिका सन् २०१० पछि पहिलोपटक विश्वकपमा फर्किएको छ। यो उसको चौथो विश्वकप सहभागिता हो र नौ खेलमध्ये दुई खेल जितेको उसले यसपटक थप प्रभावशाली प्रदर्शनको लक्ष्य राखेको छ।
१२ समूहमा विभाजित ४८ टोलीमध्ये समूह 'ए' मा मेक्सिको, दक्षिण अफ्रिका, दक्षिण कोरिया र चेक गणतन्त्र छन्। शक्तिशाली टोलीहरूमध्ये ब्राजिल र मोरक्को समूह 'सी' मा, अर्जेन्टिना समूह 'जे' मा, फ्रान्स समूह 'आई' मा र इंग्ल्यान्ड समूह 'एल' मा रहेका छन् भने स्पेन समूह 'एच' मा आफ्नो अभियान सुरु गर्नेछ।
The wait is finally over. The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup gets underway today, bringing with it a string of firsts that set this tournament apart from every previous edition. For the first time in the competition's history, three nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — are jointly hosting the event. And for the first time, the field has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, fundamentally reshaping how the world's biggest football festival will unfold.
The curtain rises in Mexico City, where co-host Mexico will face South Africa in the opening match of Group A. Nepali football fans will need to stay up late — kick-off is scheduled for 12:45 AM Nepal Standard Time. The fixture carries a touch of nostalgia as well: these same two sides met in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a game that ended 1–1 and remains one of the more memorable tournament openers in recent memory.
For Mexico, this is an 18th World Cup appearance and a tournament they know well. They have not lost an opening match since 1994 and have accumulated 60 games across all World Cup appearances — more than any team yet to lift the trophy. Their finest hours came on home soil, reaching the quarterfinals in both 1970 and 1986. South Africa, meanwhile, are returning to the World Cup stage for the first time since they hosted the tournament in 2010. This is their fourth appearance overall, and having won just two of nine previous World Cup matches, they arrive with a point to prove.
The 48 teams are spread across 12 groups. Among the headline groupings, Brazil and Morocco share Group C, Argentina headline Group J, France lead Group I, England are placed in Group L, and Spain begin their campaign in Group H. The expanded format means more nations, more stories, and more football than any World Cup before it — and it all begins tonight.
