Nerude Mirmire Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited has come under severe financial pressure in the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2083/84. The microfinance institution, which had recorded a net profit of over Rs 55.36 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year, has now incurred a net loss of Rs 27.99 million by the end of Ashwin. This drastic deterioration in its financial health is primarily attributed to an unnatural spike in bad loans (NPL) and a significant contraction in its core income streams.
According to the un-audited financial report, the institution's non-performing loan (NPL) ratio surged dramatically from 15.70 percent a year ago to a concerning 21.73 percent. An NPL ratio exceeding 21 percent indicates a severely weakened loan recovery mechanism and a sharp decline in asset quality. Consequently, the institution was forced to allocate a massive Rs 102.74 million solely for impairment charges (provisioning for potential risks). Furthermore, its core business revenue—net interest income—plunged by approximately 28 percent to Rs 288.94 million, ultimately dragging the institution into an operating loss of Rs 30.72 million.
As the institution slipped into losses due to the heavy burden of bad debts and operating expenses, key shareholder return indicators have also turned negative. The annualized Earnings Per Share (EPS), which was a positive Rs 15.84 last year, has now plunged to a negative Rs 8.01. Similarly, its dividend-paying capacity, or distributable profit, has plummeted to a negative Rs 158.11 million. Despite these overarching setbacks, the institution did manage a slight improvement in its net fee and commission income, which increased to Rs 44.56 million, while its net worth per share stood at Rs 184.40.
