Nepal Infrastructure Bank (NIFRA) has made an aggressive leap in business expansion but has been unable to boost its profits. By the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2083/84, despite a massive surge in deposit collection and loan disbursements, the bank's net profit has shrunk by over 20 percent compared to the same period last year. By the end of Ashwin, the bank earned a net profit of only Rs 16.64 crore, whereas the figure stood at around Rs 21 crore during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
The primary reasons for the drop in income amidst business growth are rising interest expenses and a higher allocation for potential credit risk provisioning. The bank's net interest income has declined by about 8 percent, restricting it to Rs 34.42 crore. Likewise, the amount set aside for provisioning surged by 215 percent compared to last year, exceeding Rs 3.87 crore, which has had a direct and severe impact on the bank's profitability.
Nevertheless, the bank's overall financial size continues to broaden. In the first three months alone, deposit collection increased by 54 percent to reach Rs 12.04 billion (12 arba 4 crore), while loan investments grew by 30 percent to Rs 34.17 billion (34 arba 17 crore). Following the decline in profit, the Earnings Per Share (EPS) of the bank, which has a paid-up capital of Rs 21.60 billion (21 arba 60 crore), has dropped to Rs 3.08, while its net worth per share stands at Rs 112.38.
