NMB Bank Launching Green Bond Worth NPR 8 Billion

NMB Bank is set to issue Nepal's first-ever NPR-denominated Green Bond worth USD 60 million (approximately NPR 8 billion). To make this possible, the bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with international institutions—IFC (International Finance Corporation), BII (British International Investment), and MetLife.

The proceeds from the Green Bond will be invested in renewable energy projects such as solar power, biomass, electric vehicles, and green buildings. According to the bank, this initiative will enhance financial access for climate-related enterprises and contribute to the development of Nepal’s energy sector.

Speaking at the MoU signing event, NMB Bank Chairman Manoj Kumar Goyal expressed confidence that this initiative would make a “transformational leap” in the renewable energy sector. He added that bringing in foreign capital for climate investment would help reduce environmental impacts.

What is a Green Bond?

A Green Bond is a type of debt instrument issued to raise funds specifically for environment-friendly and climate-focused projects. The money raised is used for renewable energy, green infrastructure, and climate change mitigation projects.
