KATHMANDU — Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has extended the deadline for the repayment of loan principal and interest by three months for borrowers affected by the floods in the Bhote Koshi and Budhi Gandaki rivers. Under the central bank's new provision, flood-hit businesses that were required to pay their installments by mid-October (Ashoj-end) can now clear their dues by mid-January (Poush-end).
This relief measure targets enterprises, projects, and businesses directly impacted by the Bhote Koshi flood on August 26 (Bhadra 10) and the recent flooding in the Budhi Gandaki river. Additionally, businesses involved in import-export trade through the Rasuwa customs point, whose operations were halted due to the floods, will also be eligible for this facility.
However, this extension will not be automatically applied to all borrowers in the flood-affected areas. Banks and financial institutions (BFIs) are required to carefully analyze the borrower's income, cash flow, and the actual impact on their business. The NRB has directed BFIs to grant the time extension only after verifying that the borrowers are genuinely facing financial difficulties in paying their installments.
