Kathmandu — Deposit collection in commercial banks has shown modest improvement during the first two months of the current fiscal year 2083/84. A total of Rs 67.34 billion was added to the banking system during the months of Shrawan and Bhadra (mid-July to mid-September). However, while 14 out of the 20 operational commercial banks managed to grow their deposits, six banks witnessed a decline compared to the end of the previous fiscal year.
According to the data, total deposits in commercial banks reached Rs 7.565 trillion by mid-September. Nabil Bank led the race in attracting new deposits, adding an impressive Rs 18.68 billion in just two months. It was followed by Nepal SBI Bank and Kumari Bank, which expanded their deposits by Rs 16.35 billion and Rs 15.26 billion, respectively. In terms of overall deposit size, Global IME Bank retains the top spot with over Rs 701 billion, followed by Rastriya Banijya Bank in second and Nabil Bank in third.
While the majority of banks successfully expanded their deposit base, some established institutions experienced an outflow of funds. NIC Asia Bank faced the steepest drop, losing Rs 13.90 billion in deposits over the two-month period. Similarly, deposits at Prime Commercial Bank and Agricultural Development Bank fell by Rs 9.03 billion and Rs 8.90 billion, respectively. Nepal Investment Mega Bank, Prabhu Bank, and NMB Bank also recorded declines. Although the overall banking system observed net deposit growth, the performance of individual banks varied significantly.
