Ukraine Launches Biggest Drone Strike on Moscow Since War Began, Capital Blanketed in Smoke
The Russia-Ukraine war has escalated to a new level. Ukraine launched what is being described as the largest drone attack on the Russian capital since the war began, sending nearly 200 drones toward Moscow and surrounding areas on Thursday. The assault left the city's skyline choked with thick black smoke as fires broke out at multiple locations across the region.
Moscow regional governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that at least 17 people were wounded in the attack. Russia's Defense Ministry meanwhile stated that nearly one thousand Ukrainian drones and four cruise missiles had been intercepted and shot down across the country within the past 24 hours alone. In the southern Rostov region, a fuel storage facility was also struck, claiming one life in the process.
The Kapotnya oil refinery in the southeastern part of Moscow bore the brunt of some of the heaviest strikes. It was the third attack on the facility within a single month and the second within the same week — a pattern suggesting Ukraine is deliberately and repeatedly targeting Russia's energy infrastructure. Videos circulating on social media showed powerful explosions at the site, with massive storage tank lids being hurled into the air by the force of the blasts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the Moscow region had been deliberately targeted, framing the assault as a direct response to a Russian strike on Kyiv the previous week that set fire to an important religious site. While reiterating that Ukraine does not seek war, Zelensky issued a stark warning — if Russia continues its attacks, Moscow will feel the consequences too. He also called on Russia to pursue a diplomatic path toward ending the conflict.
