China 72-Hour and 144-Hour Transit Visa Rules for Nepali Citizens

China 72-Hour and 144-Hour Transit Visa Rules for Nepali Citizens

China’s 72-hour and 144-hour visa-free transit policies have made it easier for travelers from many countries to explore Chinese cities while transiting to another destination. However, for Nepali passport holders, the situation is slightly different — and understanding these rules before planning your journey through China is crucial.

The 72-hour and 144-hour visa-free transit programs allow travelers from 55 designated countries to stay in China for up to 72 or 144 hours without a visa, provided they are transiting to a third country. Eligible travelers can exit the airport, stay in specific provinces, and explore local attractions before continuing their journey. These policies are available in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Xiamen, and Chongqing.

However, as of 2025, Nepali citizens are not eligible for either the 72-hour or 144-hour visa-free transit policy. Nepal is not listed among the approved countries under China’s extended transit exemption list. This means that while citizens of countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many European nations can enter China for short stays without a visa, Nepali travelers must continue to apply for a G-type (Transit) Visa or use the 24-hour visa-free transit option.

Nepali travelers can still take advantage of the 24-hour visa-free transit if their layover is under one day and they remain in the airport’s transit zone. But if they wish to leave the airport or if their total transit time exceeds 24 hours, they are required to obtain a Transit Visa (G-Type) in advance from the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) located in Rising Mall, Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

The G-type visa process requires:

  • Valid Nepali passport (minimum six months validity)

  • Recent passport-size photograph (48x33 mm)

  • Confirmed onward air ticket to a third country (not returning to Nepal)

  • Proof of destination visa (if required)

  • Visa application form filled through www.visaforchina.cn
The standard processing time is 4–7 working days, with express services available for urgent travelers.

Therefore, Nepali passengers transiting through China should plan their layovers carefully. If the stopover exceeds 24 hours or involves multiple Chinese cities, applying for a G Visa before departure ensures a smooth journey.
