China Airport Transit Visa for Nepali Travelers — Full 2025 Guide

China Airport Transit Visa for Nepali Travelers — Full 2025 Guide

For Nepali travelers transiting through Chinese airports while heading to a third country, it’s essential to understand China’s airport transit visa and visa-free transit rules. China offers several types of transit exemptions for international passengers — mainly the 24-hour visa-free transit and the extended 72-hour / 144-hour / 240-hour visa-free transit schemes. However, eligibility depends on nationality, transit duration, and port of entry.

For Nepali passport holders, China generally allows a 24-hour visa-free airport transit if the traveler holds a confirmed onward air ticket to a third country (not returning to Nepal) and remains within the international transit area of the airport. This means if your layover in China is less than 24 hours and you are not leaving the airport, you do not need to apply for a transit visa (G visa). For example, a traveler flying from Kathmandu to Tokyo via Guangzhou or from Kathmandu to Seoul via Beijing can remain inside the airport transit zone without needing a visa, provided the layover does not exceed 24 hours.

However, some airports in China — especially smaller or non-designated international transit hubs like Fuzhou, Huangshan, Mudanjiang, and Yanji — do not allow visa-free transits for all nationalities, including Nepalis. In such cases, travelers must apply for a G-type (Transit) Visa in advance. The G visa requires a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), recent photo, confirmed onward flight tickets, and proof of final destination visa if required by the next country. The visa can be obtained through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) located at Rising Mall, Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

If your transit exceeds 24 hours or if you wish to leave the airport during a longer layover, you must apply for a transit visa or check eligibility for longer visa-free stays (up to 240 hours) offered at major airports like Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Kunming. Under this policy, passengers traveling to a third country via China may stay within a specified city or region for up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa, provided they meet all entry conditions — such as valid onward tickets and proof of accommodation.

To avoid confusion or last-minute issues, it is advised to confirm with your airline before departure whether your transit route qualifies for visa-free transit. Additionally, always carry printed copies of your flight itinerary, passport, and final destination visa. In case of doubt or multiple transits within China, obtaining a G visa in advance is the safest option for Nepali travelers.
