China Family Visit Visa for Nepali Citizens — Requirements Explained

China Family Visit Visa for Nepali Citizens — Requirements Explained

For Nepali citizens who wish to visit their family members, relatives, or spouses living in China, the China Family Visit Visa (Q or S Visa) is the official travel document issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. This visa allows Nepali nationals to travel to China to meet Chinese citizens, permanent residents, or foreigners legally working or studying in China. Depending on the relationship and duration of stay, applicants must apply for either a Q1, Q2, S1, or S2 Visa.

The Q Visa is designed for family visits to Chinese citizens or permanent residents, whereas the S Visa is for family members visiting foreigners living in China (for example, Nepalis visiting Nepali or other foreign nationals who are working or studying there). Among these, Q1 and S1 visas are for long-term stays exceeding 180 days, while Q2 and S2 visas are for short-term visits under 180 days.

To apply for a China Family Visit Visa, applicants must submit a set of documents that clearly prove their relationship and purpose of visit. The primary requirements include:

  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months’ validity and 2 blank pages)

  • Visa application form filled via visaforchina.cn

  • Recent passport-size photograph (48mm × 33mm)

  • Invitation letter issued by the family member in China

  • Copy of the inviter’s Chinese ID card or residence permit

  • Proof of relationship (such as marriage certificate, birth certificate, or family registration book)

  • Financial proof (bank statement showing sufficient balance)

  • Flight booking and accommodation confirmation

The invitation letter must be issued by the family member or host in China and must include the applicant’s full name, passport number, relationship, purpose of visit, intended duration, and inviter’s address and contact number. If the inviter is a Chinese citizen, they must attach a copy of their Chinese ID card (both sides); if a foreigner, they must attach their passport and residence permit.

The visa processing time is generally 4 to 7 working days, depending on the accuracy of submitted documents. The visa fee ranges from NPR 12,000 to 18,000 depending on single or double entry. Long-term visas (Q1/S1) may require applicants to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival in China.
