China Tourist Visa for Nepali Citizens 2026: Updated Rules

China remains an important and attractive destination for Nepali travelers because of its ancient civilization, world-famous landmarks, modern cities, business hubs, and cultural diversity. In 2026, Nepali passport holders who wish to travel to China for tourism, sightseeing, or short-term personal visits must apply for a China Tourist (L) Visa by following updated and well-defined visa rules. This guide explains the latest China tourist visa policy, required documents, application procedures, and important notes for Nepali citizens.

The China Tourist Visa allows Nepali travelers to visit China for holidays, leisure travel, sightseeing, and short recreational purposes. This visa does not permit paid employment, business work, or long-term residence. All applications must be prepared carefully, as the Chinese visa process is highly document-oriented and strictly reviewed by consular officers.

Applicants must submit an original passport that is valid for at least six (6) months from the date of application and contains a minimum of two blank visa pages. A photocopy of the passport bio-data page is also required. Passports that are torn, water-damaged, stained, or have missing pages will not be accepted. It is also an international practice for consular officers to review previous travel history, so applicants are strongly advised to bring their old passport if they have one.

Two recent color photographs are required. The photos must be taken against a plain white background, showing the applicant’s full face, bareheaded, and facing forward. The photo size must be 48 mm × 33 mm (small 2-inch documentary photo). The photograph must be clear, identifiable, and recent, matching official Chinese visa photo standards. Incorrect photo formats are a common reason for application delays or rejection.

Applicants must complete the online “Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China” accurately and completely. After completing the form online, applicants must print the full application form and sign it. All information must be correct and complete; otherwise, the application will not be accepted. Hand-written application forms are strictly not accepted. Applicants must upload their own photograph while filling out the online form. Uploading someone else’s photo will result in rejection, and the applicant will be required to refill the form. If online upload fails, the visa center may assist with scanning and uploading the photo on the submission day.

A Data Protection Declaration is mandatory. Applicants must download, print, complete, and sign the Consent Form for Personal Data Collection (Data Processing Agreement) and submit it along with other documents.

Applicants who are not applying from their country of nationality must submit proof of lawful stay or residence, such as a valid visa, work permit, study permit, or residence certificate. Both the original and a photocopy are required. Additional residence documentation may be requested depending on the applicant’s status.

For applicants who previously held Chinese nationality and later acquired foreign nationality, additional documents are required. First-time applicants must submit their original Chinese passport and a copy of the bio-data page. Applicants who were previously issued a Chinese visa and are applying with a new foreign passport must submit copies of the old passport bio page and previous Chinese visa. If the name on the new passport differs from the old one, official name-change documents must be provided.

Minor applicants must submit a birth certificate, copies of both parents’ valid documents, and a written consent letter from both parents or legal guardians. Additional official documents may be requested depending on the case.

Applicants must also submit travel-related supporting documents. For individual tourists, this includes round-trip air ticket reservations and hotel bookings covering at least half of the trip, with the applicant’s name clearly mentioned on all reservations. For group tours, applicants must provide round-trip flight tickets and an invitation letter issued by a licensed travel agency in China. This invitation must include personal details of the traveler, full itinerary, accommodation arrangements, and complete details of the inviting travel agency with official seal and signature.

For short-term visits to friends who are Chinese citizens, applicants must provide round-trip air tickets, a copy of the inviter’s Chinese ID card (front and back), and a signed invitation letter clearly stating the relationship, visit purpose, travel dates, and accommodation details.

For foreigners visiting friends who are foreign nationals living in China for work or study, additional documents are required, including copies of the inviter’s passport, Chinese visa and residence permit, an invitation letter, return air ticket, and proof of accommodation such as a rental contract or temporary residence registration.

Applicants should note that scanned or photocopied invitation letters are generally accepted, but consular officers may request the original invitation if necessary. Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may be asked to submit additional documents or attend an interview. The final decision regarding visa issuance, validity, number of entries, and duration of stay rests entirely with the Chinese Embassy or the responsible Chinese consular authority.
