Delivering a Speech in Hong Kong as a Visitor — Rules for Nepali Professionals

Nepali professionals can deliver speeches or presentations in Hong Kong under a Visit Visa if the event is unpaid and limited to 14 consecutive days. Delivering a Speech in Hong Kong as a Visitor — Rules for Nepali Professionals

Nepali professionals planning to travel to Hong Kong for conferences, seminars, or special events can deliver speeches or presentations under a Visit Visa or Entry Permit, but they must comply strictly with Hong Kong’s immigration conditions. According to the Hong Kong Immigration Department, delivering a speech or presentation is a permissible visitor activity, provided that the visitor does not receive payment or engage in employment.

If a Nepali professional is invited to speak, present, or participate in a panel discussion, they are legally allowed to do so under visitor status — as long as no remuneration is received for their participation. This means you can’t be paid for your speech, training, or lecture in Hong Kong, but the event organizer may reimburse your travel, hotel, and meal expenses associated with your visit.

Under the Immigration Facilitation Scheme for Visitors Participating in Short-term Activities in Designated Sectors (STV Scheme), professionals from recognized fields such as arts, culture, innovation, finance, and researchmay be allowed to receive payment if the event is organized by a government-approved or authorized institution. However, this requires specific approval, and most general visitors are expected to participate on a non-paid basis.

Another key rule is the duration limit. A visitor can deliver speeches or presentations for up to 14 consecutive calendar days during each period of stay in Hong Kong. This means you may attend multiple events or conferences within that 14-day window, but beyond that, you would need to exit and re-enter under a new visa or obtain a separate entry permit.

Importantly, even when giving a presentation, your immigration status remains that of a visitor. Therefore, you are not allowed to take up employment, manage a business, or work for any organization in Hong Kong. The speech activity must be occasional and limited to the event purpose only.

Event organizers in Hong Kong also carry a responsibility. They must ensure that invited speakers from abroad — including Nepal — comply with the visitor activity rules. If the event is under the STV Scheme, the host must be a recognized organizer under the government’s designated list.

If a visitor is found violating visa rules — for example, by taking paid work or staying beyond their permitted duration — penalties under Section 41 of the Hong Kong Immigration Ordinance (Cap. 115) may apply, which include a fine up to HKD 50,000 and imprisonment for up to 2 years.

Therefore, Nepali professionals visiting Hong Kong for short-term speaking engagements should plan carefully — ensure their invitation letter clearly mentions that the engagement is unpaid, attach proof of accommodation, return flight, and maintain compliance with the 14-day rule.

For expert assistance in preparing visa applications, event invitations, or conference documentation, Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd. offers full visa processing support for Hong Kong and over 70 countries, including Thailand, Japan, China, Indonesia, Australia, and Schengen Europe.
