A transit visa is required for layovers exceeding 12 hours, changing airports, or leaving the transit area. Do Nepalis Need a Transit Visa at Bangkok Airport? Full Guide

For many Nepali travelers flying to destinations such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, or the Middle East, Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) often serves as a major transit hub. Understanding whether you need a Thailand Transit Visa during your layover can help avoid unnecessary stress during your journey. The good news is that most Nepali travelers do not need a transit visa when connecting flights at Bangkok Airport — as long as they stay inside the international transit area and their layover does not exceed 12 hours.

If your connecting flight is booked under the same ticket or airline alliance (for example, Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, or Emirates), you can remain within the airport’s international zone without going through Thai immigration. In this case, you can wait for your next flight in the designated transit lounge and are not required to hold a visa. Your checked baggage will be transferred automatically to your final destination, and you will not need to collect it during the layover.

However, a Transit Visa (Category “TS”) becomes mandatory under certain circumstances. You will need it if your layover exceeds 12 hours, if you need to leave the transit zone, or if you have separate flight tickets that require you to check in again. For example, if you are flying from Kathmandu to Bangkok on one airline and then from Bangkok to Tokyo or Kuala Lumpur on another airline with a separate ticket, you must go through immigration to retrieve your luggage — and therefore need a Thailand Transit Visa. Similarly, if you plan to stay overnight in a Bangkok airport hotel outside the secure area, you must also apply for this visa.

To apply for a Thailand Transit Visa (TS), Nepali citizens must submit their application to the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu before traveling. Required documents include a valid passport (minimum 6 months), a completed visa form, two recent photographs, a confirmed onward flight ticket, financial proof (at least THB 10,000 for individual travelers and THB 20,000 for families), and a visa for the next destination country, if required. The visa fee is payable through a Manager’s Cheque issued by Global IME Bank to “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu.” The visa is valid for 90 days and allows a maximum stay of 30 days in Thailand.

It is also important to verify with your airline whether your connecting flights are within the same booking reference (PNR) or if you need to recheck your luggage. Passengers connecting within the same booking generally do not need a visa. However, if your itinerary involves airport transfers between Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), a transit visa is required, as you must pass through immigration to travel between the two airports.

For hassle-free documentation and assistance, Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd. — Nepal’s leading visa and travel assistance agency — helps travelers confirm whether a transit visa is necessary, prepares embassy documents, and manages visa applications for those transiting through Bangkok. The agency also offers guidance for travelers heading to over 70 countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea.
