Do Nepalis Need a Transit Visa for Tokyo or Osaka Airport?

For Nepali citizens traveling to third countries via Tokyo (Narita, Haneda) or Osaka (Kansai, Itami) airports, understanding the Japan Transit Visa rules is essential to avoid travel disruptions. Since Nepal is not included in Japan’s visa-exempt list, most Nepali travelers require a transit visa when passing through Japan — unless they stay entirely inside the international transit area without entering Japanese immigration.

If your connecting flight is from the same airport and terminal and your baggage is checked through to the final destination, you can stay in the airside transit area without needing to pass immigration. In this case, a Japan Airport Transit Visa is not required. However, if your layover involves changing terminals, collecting baggage, transferring airports (Haneda ↔ Narita or Osaka ↔ Kansai), or staying overnight, you will have to pass through immigration — and therefore, a transit visa becomes mandatory.

In airports like Narita (NRT) and Kansai (KIX), which have 24-hour international transit facilities, short layovers of up to 8 hours usually do not require a visa, provided you do not leave the secure zone. But Haneda (HND) or Itami (ITM) airports may not always have such facilities, especially for certain airlines, and you might be required to recheck baggage or change terminals — which triggers the visa requirement.

Airlines such as Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) often insist that Nepali passengers present a valid transit visa before boarding from Kathmandu, even for short layovers. Therefore, obtaining a transit visa in advance is strongly recommended.

To apply for a Japan Transit Visa, you must submit your application through the VFS Japan Visa Application Centre located at Chhaya Center, Thamel, Kathmandu. You will need:

  • A valid passport (minimum 6-month validity)

  • Visa application form (filled and signed)

  • Confirmed onward flight ticket to a third country within 72 hours

  • Valid visa for the destination country (if required)

  • A passport-size photo (2x2 inch)

  • Cover letter explaining your travel route

  • Visa fee of around ¥700 (approx. NPR 600) plus VFS service charge (NPR 1,000–2,000)

Processing time usually takes 5–7 working days, and it is advisable to apply at least 2 weeks before your flight. The visa is valid for a single entry and allows up to 15 days of short stay, but you must remain within the international zone unless explicitly permitted.

For Nepali travelers, confirming your flight route and airport layout before booking tickets is important. Not all Japanese airports support visa-free transfer; hence, if your journey involves different terminals or airports, getting a Japan Transit Visa beforehand prevents last-minute issues.
