Documents Needed to Visit Relatives in Thailand from Nepal

For Nepali citizens who want to visit their family members or relatives living in Thailand, the appropriate visa type is the Thailand Family Visit Visa, also known as the Non-Immigrant “O” Visa. This visa allows close relatives such as spouses, parents, or children of Thai nationals or foreign residents in Thailand to travel for short family visits, care, or reunion purposes. To apply successfully through the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu or the Thailand eVisa system (www.thaievisa.go.th), applicants must prepare a complete set of supporting documents as per embassy requirements.

The first and most important document is a valid passport with at least six months’ validity beyond the planned travel date and two or more blank pages. Applicants must also fill out the Thailand Visa Application Form, which can be downloaded from the embassy’s website or completed online via the eVisa portal. Two recent passport-sized photographs (3.5 × 4.5 cm) with a white background are required.

Applicants must submit a relationship proof document that establishes the family connection between the applicant and the person living in Thailand. For spouses, a marriage certificate (translated into English and notarized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal) is mandatory. For parents or children, a birth certificate confirming the relationship is required. If the relative in Thailand is not a Thai citizen but a foreign resident, then copies of their passport, visa, or work permit must also be included.

If the relative is a Thai national, a copy of their Thai ID card and house registration certificate (Tabien Baan) should be attached. The applicant must also provide proof of accommodation—such as a hotel booking or a letter from the relative confirming that the applicant will stay with them—and round-trip flight booking confirmation showing travel to and from Thailand.

To prove financial capability, the applicant must provide a bank statement of the last six months, showing sufficient balance (preferably equivalent to THB 500,000, or around NPR 2.3 million). This is required to demonstrate the applicant’s ability to cover travel and living expenses during their stay. Additionally, proof of residence in Nepal, such as a citizenship card or utility bill, should be included.

The visa fee for a Family Visit Visa is THB 2,000 for a single-entry visa, payable via a Manager’s Cheque drawn in favor of “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu”, obtainable through Global IME Bank. The embassy does not accept cash or online payment. All documents must be organized clearly and submitted to the embassy during working hours (usually 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM). The processing time generally ranges from 3 to 7 working days depending on document verification.

Once approved, the visa allows the holder to stay in Thailand for up to 90 days per visit. Extensions may be requested from the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok if valid reasons—such as family care or dependent support—are provided.

To avoid delays, all details in documents (names, dates of birth, passport numbers) must exactly match across the application form and relationship proofs. Any discrepancy or missing signature may lead to rejection. For stress-free processing, Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., Nepal’s most trusted visa and travel agency, offers complete support for Family Visit Visa applications, including document translation, attestation, Manager’s Cheque preparation, and embassy submission.
