Extension of Stay in Hong Kong for Visitors — Rules for Nepali Tourists

Extension of Stay in Hong Kong for Visitors — Rules for Nepali Tourists

For Nepali citizens visiting Hong Kong under a valid Visit Visa or Entry Permit, the period of stay is clearly mentioned on the landing slip provided by Hong Kong Immigration upon arrival. Generally, Nepali tourists are allowed to stay for 14 to 30 days, depending on their visa type and travel purpose. However, if a visitor wishes to remain longer — due to reasons such as medical treatment, delayed flights, family emergencies, or extended tourism — they can apply for an Extension of Stay (EOS) under the official rules of the Hong Kong Immigration Department (HKSAR).

To be eligible, the applicant must still be physically present in Hong Kong and must apply within 14 days before the expiry of their current limit of stay. If the stay has already expired, the visitor is considered an overstayer — which is a serious immigration violation leading to fines, detention, or future visa rejections. The extension process begins with completing the application form ID91, available both online and at the Immigration Headquarters in Tseung Kwan O, New Territories. The form must be submitted along with a valid passport, the landing slip, and supporting documentsexplaining the reason for the requested extension.

Applicants must also provide proof of sufficient funds to sustain themselves during the extended stay, such as a recent bank statement, and show evidence of a genuine reason for delay — for example, a doctor’s certificate for medical treatment or a flight rescheduling confirmation from the airline. All supporting documents not in English or Chinese must be translated before submission. During this period, visitors are strictly prohibited from taking up employment, studying full-time, or engaging in business activities in Hong Kong.

The Immigration Department reviews each case individually, and approval is not automatic. Once approved, an extension visa label or e-Visa is issued, usually for an additional 14 or 30 days, depending on the applicant’s situation. Applications can be submitted online through the HKSAR portal or in person at the Extension Section, 5th Floor, Administration Tower, Immigration Headquarters. Online applications are generally processed within a few working days.

For Nepali tourists, it’s recommended to apply for an extension early, maintain complete transparency, and avoid overstaying at all costs. Those unsure about documentation or online submission can seek guidance from Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., Koteshwor (Contact: 9802348957), which offers support for visa extensions, document translation, and coordination with immigration authorities.
