Hong Kong Travel Tips for Nepali Citizens — Visa, Stay & Entry Rules

For Nepali citizens planning a visit to Hong Kong, understanding the visa, stay duration, and entry procedures is essential before departure. Unlike travelers from visa-exempt countries, Nepali passport holders must obtain a Visit Visa or Entry Permit prior to arrival in Hong Kong. Applications can be submitted either through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu (Baluwatar) or directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department (HKSAR) via courier or local sponsor.

Applicants are required to fill out Form ID1003A (applicant) and Form ID1003B (for sponsor, if applicable) and attach essential documents — a valid Nepali passport, recent photographs, travel itinerary, hotel and flight bookings, bank statement of the last six months, and, if applicable, an invitation letter from a Hong Kong resident or company. The processing period is generally 4–6 weeks, and the visa fee is HKD 230 (approximately NPR 4,000).

Upon approval, Nepali visitors are usually granted a 14–30-day stay depending on the travel purpose and visa type. Travelers must carry printed copies of their visa label, return air ticket, and proof of sufficient funds at the point of entry. Immigration officers may question the purpose of the visit and financial capacity, so maintaining transparency and proper documentation is crucial.

During their stay, visitors must strictly abide by Hong Kong’s visitor rules — they cannot work, enroll in a full-time study program, or engage in any paid activity. Violation of these conditions may lead to fines, detention, or deportation. If travelers need to remain longer due to genuine reasons (such as medical or family emergencies), they can apply for an Extension of Stay (Form ID91) within 14 days before their visa expires.

For a smooth experience, Nepali travelers should also keep in mind:

  • Use only licensed money exchangers and carry both Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) and an international debit/credit card.

  • Local transport is efficient — Octopus Card is recommended for MTR, buses, and ferries.

  • Follow all customs and quarantine rules; restricted items like tobacco, meat, or plants require declaration.

  • English is widely spoken, and Hong Kong is considered one of Asia’s safest destinations.

Travelers are encouraged to apply early (at least 6–8 weeks before travel) and verify their documents with a professional travel agency such as Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., Koteshwor (Contact: 9802348957), which provides visa filing, financial document preparation, and pre-departure guidance for Nepali applicants.
