Hong Kong Visit Visa vs Entry Permit — Difference Explained for Nepalese

For Nepali travelers, both the Hong Kong Visit Visa and Entry Permit serve as entry authorization documents for short-term non-working visits. Since Nepal is not on the visa-free list, all Nepali citizens must apply before traveling. The Visit Visa is primarily for tourism and business visits, while the Entry Permit is the formal approval document issued by Hong Kong authorities. Both require accurate documentation and take around 2–4 weeks to process.

Hong Kong Visit Visa vs Entry Permit — Difference Explained for Nepalese

When planning a trip to Hong Kong, many Nepali travelers come across two similar terms on the Hong Kong Immigration Department website — “Visit Visa” and “Entry Permit.” Although they are often used together, they have subtle distinctions that are important for applicants to understand before submitting their documents.

The Visit Visa refers to the authorization granted to a foreign national to enter Hong Kong for tourism, short business visits, or family/social visits. This visa type is designed for travelers who wish to stay for a limited duration — typically 14, 30, or 90 days — depending on the purpose of travel and the Immigration Department’s discretion. During this period, the traveler is considered a visitor, and they are not permitted to work, study, or engage in profit-making activities.

On the other hand, the term Entry Permit is broader in scope. It refers to an official entry authorization documentthat covers not only visitor purposes but also other temporary or special categories — such as transit, short-term business meetings, or specific cultural and professional activities. The Hong Kong government combines both under the official heading “Visit Visa / Entry Permit,” as both serve the same function: to grant lawful permission to enter and stay temporarily in Hong Kong.

For Nepali citizens, since Nepal is not included in Hong Kong’s visa-free entry list, obtaining a Visit Visa / Entry Permit is mandatory for all types of short stays — whether for tourism, business, seminars, or even transits requiring immigration clearance. Applicants must apply to the Hong Kong Immigration Department or submit their application through a Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

The application process requires filling out Form ID 1003A (for the applicant) and Form ID 1003B (for a local sponsor, if applicable), available at the Hong Kong Immigration Department’s official website. Required documents include a valid passport (with at least 6 months’ validity), passport-sized photo, flight and hotel bookings, bank statement, and a letter explaining the purpose of travel. Those applying for business visits must also provide invitation letters or proof of meetings from Hong Kong-based organizations.

After online submission, the original signed forms and documents must be sent by air mail to the Immigration Department, 61 Po Yap Road, Tseung Kwan O, New Territories, Hong Kong. The processing time is usually 2 to 4 weeks, depending on document accuracy and workload. Once approved, applicants receive an eVisa (electronic visa), which they can print and carry for immigration clearance.

In short, while the Visit Visa generally applies to tourism or short business purposes, the Entry Permit represents the broader legal authorization allowing that entry. Both documents prohibit employment and are issued under the same immigration policy framework.
