How to Apply for a Chinese Tourist Visa from Nepal (Step-by-Step)

Applying for a Chinese Tourist Visa (L Visa) from Nepal involves a detailed process that requires careful preparation of documents and timely submission at the Chinese Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu. As of 2025, all Nepali citizens planning to visit China for tourism must follow the official guidelines set by the Chinese Embassy. Each application is reviewed by consular officers, who determine the visa type and validity based on the traveler’s stated purpose, financial stability, and travel plan.

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Type

For tourists, the appropriate category is L Visa (Tourist Visa), which is granted to applicants traveling for sightseeing or leisure purposes. If you are invited by a friend or family member residing in China, you must mention that in your application and attach the invitation letter along with the host’s Chinese ID or residence permit.

Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

You must collect and prepare the following documents before booking an appointment:

  • Original passport with at least six months validity and blank visa pages.

  • Completed visa application form (can be filled online and printed).

  • Recent passport-size photo (white background, taken within the last six months).

  • Round-trip flight tickets and hotel booking confirmation.

  • Bank statement showing sufficient funds for travel expenses.

  • For those invited by someone in China: Invitation letter and ID proof of the inviter.

Step 3: Book an Appointment

Appointments for submission are made online through the Chinese Visa Application Centre website. You must attend personally for biometric fingerprint collection (applicants under 14 or over 70 years old are exempted). Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd. can assist in scheduling your appointment and ensuring your documents are in the correct format.

Step 4: Submit Application at Visa Centre

On the day of your appointment, visit the Chinese Visa Application Centre, Kathmandu, with all original and photocopied documents.
If your online photograph fails to upload after three attempts, bring a compliant printed photo to be uploaded on-site by visa officers.

Step 5: Pay Fees and Choose Service Type

The visa centre offers three types of services:

  • Regular Service: 4 working days

  • Express Service: 3 working days

  • Rush Service: 2 working days (for applications submitted before noon)

Visa fees and service charges depend on the selected service type and nationality.

Step 6: Collect Your Passport

After processing, collect your passport on the specified date mentioned on your receipt. In case you lose your pick-up slip, bring a valid photo ID for verification.
If someone else is collecting it for you, they must present a notarized authorization letter and both identity documents.
