How to Apply for China Long-Stay Family Visa from Nepal

For Nepali citizens planning to live with their spouse, parents, or children in China for more than 180 days, the China Long-Stay Family Visa (Q1 or S1 category) is the ideal choice. This visa allows applicants to stay long-term with their family members in China and later convert their visa into a Temporary Residence Permit. The entire process is handled by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kathmandu through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) located at Rising Mall, Kamaladi.
The Q1 Visa is for family members of Chinese citizens or permanent residents of China, while the S1 Visa is for family members of foreign nationals legally residing in China (such as work or student visa holders). Choosing the correct visa type is essential before applying.
Applicants must prepare a valid Nepali passport (with at least 6 months validity), a recent passport-sized photo (48×33 mm, white background), and a completed online application form available at www.visaforchina.cn. The invitation letter from the spouse or family member in China must include the applicant’s full name, purpose of visit, duration of stay, relationship, and inviter’s address and ID details.
A key requirement is proof of relationship, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or family registration document, which must be translated into English or Chinese and notarized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Nepal. Other documents include a bank statement for the past 3–6 months, flight booking, hotel reservation or inviter’s address, and a copy of the inviter’s Chinese ID card (for Chinese citizens) or passport and residence permit (for foreign residents).
Once the documents are ready, applicants must fill out the form online, print it, sign it, and book an appointment with CVASC Kathmandu. On the scheduled date, applicants must visit the center to submit the documents and pay the visa fee, which ranges between NPR 12,000 and NPR 18,000. The standard processing time is 4–7 working days, while express service is available within 2–3 days.
After receiving the visa, applicants must travel to China and apply for a Temporary Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival at the Public Security Bureau (PSB) in their city. For this, they must present a passport, medical check report, invitation letter, proof of relationship, and residence registration certificate. The permit allows residence for 6 months to 2 years, depending on the inviter’s status.
