Japan Airport Transit Visa for Nepali Citizens — When You Need It

For Nepali citizens traveling through Japan on their way to another country, understanding when a Japan Airport Transit Visa is required is crucial to avoid flight disruptions. Japan’s transit visa policy depends on the passenger’s nationality, airport type, and travel route. Since Nepal is not on Japan’s visa-exemption list, almost all Nepali travelers passing through Japanese airports need a transit visa, except under very specific circumstances.

If your journey involves a connecting flight within the same Japanese airport and terminal — for example, arriving at Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Osaka Kansai (KIX) and immediately boarding your next international flight without crossing immigration or collecting baggage — then you do not need a transit visa. This is valid only if your baggage is checked through to your final destination and the layover time is short. However, if you must change terminals, recheck luggage, or spend the night at the airport, you will be required to pass through Japanese immigration — which means a transit visa becomes mandatory.

In practical terms, Nepali travelers transiting between Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT), or any layover exceeding 8–12 hours, must obtain a Japan Airport Transit Visa in advance. Airlines like Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) strictly enforce this rule, often refusing boarding in Kathmandu without a valid transit visa for Nepali nationals.

To apply, you must submit your application through the VFS Japan Visa Application Centre, Kathmandu (Chhaya Center, Thamel). Required documents include:

  • A valid passport (at least 6 months validity)

  • A filled visa application form

  • Confirmed flight booking showing onward travel within 72 hours

  • Valid visa for the next destination country (e.g., U.S., Canada, Australia, etc.)

  • Recent passport-size photo (2x2 inches)

  • Cover letter explaining travel route and reason for transit

  • Visa fee of around ¥700 (approx. NPR 600) and VFS service fee (approx. NPR 1,000–2,000)

Processing time is generally 5 to 7 working days, and travelers are advised to apply at least two weeks before their flight. The visa is typically valid for a single entry with a maximum stay of 15 days, restricted to the airport’s international zone.

For Nepali passengers, it’s important to note that not all Japanese airports have 24-hour international transit facilities. Major hubs like Narita and Kansai provide secure transit zones, but smaller airports may not — requiring immigration clearance even for short layovers. Thus, having a pre-approved transit visa ensures smooth entry and avoids flight delays or boarding denials.
