Japan e-Visa for Nepalis — Documents, Fees & Photo Specifications

Japan has introduced the Japan e-Visa system to simplify the visa process for tourists, replacing traditional paper-based methods with a completely digital system. The e-Visa is an official authorization issued electronically by the Government of Japan, allowing foreign nationals to enter Japan for short-term stays (up to 90 days) for tourism, leisure, or visiting relatives. Once the e-Visa system becomes fully available to Nepali citizens (expected soon under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ expansion plan), travelers from Nepal will be able to complete the entire process online — from filling out forms to uploading documents and paying the visa fee — without visiting the Embassy or VFS Centre physically.

To apply, you’ll need to visit the official Japan e-Visa portal (https://www.evisa.mofa.go.jp) and create an account using a valid email. You must enter personal details such as full name, passport number, date of birth, travel period, purpose of visit, and accommodation information. The system will verify your passport eligibility before allowing submission. After completing the form, upload the required documents — including a scanned passport bio page, a digital passport-sized photo, proof of flight booking, hotel reservation, and financial proof (like a bank statement from the last 3–6 months or salary certificate). You may also include a cover letter explaining your travel purpose and a sponsorship letter if someone else is funding your trip.

The visa fee for Japan e-Visa is equivalent to a standard short-term tourist visa, approximately JPY 3,000 (NPR 2,680), payable online through debit or credit card. After successful payment, applicants receive a confirmation email from the MOFA Japan e-Visa system. The processing time is typically 5–7 working days, though it may vary based on individual cases. Once approved, you will receive a digital “Visa Issuance Notice” PDF containing a QR code or barcode. Japan no longer issues physical visa stickers for e-Visa holders — travelers only need to show the digital confirmation on their device during airport check-in or immigration.

The validity of the visa is three months from the date of issuance, and travelers can stay for up to 90 days per entry. All applicants are advised to keep original documents such as hotel bookings, return flight tickets, and financial statements, as Japanese immigration officers may verify them upon arrival.

The photo requirements for the Japan e-Visa are very specific. The photo should be 45mm × 45mm (square) or 35mm × 45mm (portrait), taken within the last six months. The background must be plain white or light-colored, with no shadows or patterns. Your face must be clearly visible, centered, and covering 70–80% of the image, with neutral expression, eyes open, and mouth closed. Avoid wearing headgear (except for religious reasons) or tinted glasses. The photo should be uploaded in JPG, PNG, or BMP format, with a maximum file size of 2MB.

While the e-Visa for Nepalese citizens is expected soon, applicants should start preparing their digital documents according to these guidelines. When the system becomes active, the process will be paperless and faster, reducing the need to visit embassies.
