Japan Family Visit Visa for Nepali Citizens — Required Documents

For Nepali citizens who wish to visit their close relatives or family members living in Japan, the Japan Family Visit Visa (also known as “Visiting Relatives Visa”) is a short-term visa that allows a stay of up to 90 days. It is typically granted to those visiting immediate family such as parents, children, siblings, or spouses living legally in Japan, either as Japanese citizens or foreign residents. The application process requires both the applicant in Nepal and the inviter in Japan to submit multiple authentic and consistent documents proving identity, relationship, and financial capability.

Applicants in Nepal must prepare a valid passport with blank pages, complete the visa application form (in English or Japanese), and attach a recent photograph (45×35 mm, white background). They also need to provide a copy of the passport bio page, flight reservations, and a detailed travel itinerary including entry and exit dates and the inviter’s address in Japan. Financial documents are essential — these include a bank statement covering the last 3–6 months, a bank balance certificate, and an income / tax certificate verifying your ability to fund your trip. To establish the family relationship, you must include certified documents such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or relationship certificate confirming kinship with the person in Japan.

From the Japan side, the inviter or guarantor must furnish an Invitation Letter that clearly states the purpose, duration, and relationship, and a Letter of Guarantee if covering your costs (travel, accommodation). They must also provide a Residence Certificate (Juminhyo) showing their registration address and household details. If the inviter is a Japanese national, a Family Register (Koseki Tohon) is required; if they are foreign residents, a copy of their Residence Card / Visa status should be included. The inviter must also submit proof of income or tax records or recent bank statements to demonstrate financial ability to support your visit.

All Nepalese documents not in English or Japanese must be translated officially, and every name, date, and address must properly match across documents. Any inconsistency, missing item, or vague detail can lead to delays or rejection. The Embassy may request extra documents or conduct interviews if the relationship, finances, or intent appears unclear. Applicants should avoid using fake or refundable bookings, as such “dummy” documents are typically rejected.

After preparing all documents, applicants must submit them at VFS Japan Visa Centre in Kathmandu (Chhaya Center, Thamel). The processing time is usually 5–7 working days, though verification may extend this. Visa and service fees are paid at VFS during submission. A well-organized, complete file improves the chances of smooth approval.
