Japan Long-Term Visa Options for Nepali Citizens

Japan offers long-term visa options to Nepali citizens across various categories — including Work Visa, Specified Skilled Worker (SSW), Student Visa, Dependent Visa, and Investor/Manager Visa. The COE process is crucial for most applications. Among these, the SSW program is the most practical pathway for Nepali workers, while students and professionals have expanding opportunities in education and corporate sectors. Professional guidance from Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd. ensures error-free visa processing and faster approvals.

Japan Long-Term Visa Options for Nepali Citizens

For Nepali citizens planning to live, work, or study in Japan for more than 90 days, there are several long-term visa options available under Japan’s “Status of Residence” system. Each visa type corresponds to the purpose of stay — such as employment, education, investment, or family reunion — and typically requires a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by Japanese Immigration before applying at the Embassy or VFS Japan Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu.

The most common long-term visa for Nepali citizens is the Work Visa. This includes categories like Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services — designed for skilled professionals such as IT engineers, business analysts, interpreters, or finance officers. These visas are usually valid from 1 to 5 years and are renewable based on continued employment and clean record. Applicants need an employment contract, relevant academic qualifications, and a Japanese company to act as their visa sponsor.

Another popular option is the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW / 特定技能) visa. This program allows semi-skilled workers to work in Japan across 16 designated sectors, such as caregiving, construction, food service, and manufacturing. The SSW Type 1 visa allows a stay of up to 5 years, while Type 2 can lead to long-term residence or even permanent settlement in certain industries. To qualify, applicants must pass a Japanese language test (JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic) and a skills exam in their chosen field. This pathway has become one of the most accessible long-term opportunities for Nepali workers.

Students seeking higher education in Japan can apply for a Student Visa, valid throughout their academic program (usually 1 to 4 years). Applicants need an admission letter from a recognized institution, proof of tuition payment, and a COE provided by the school. This visa also allows limited part-time work.

For those who have family members working or studying in Japan, the Dependent Visa allows spouses and children to stay legally. The validity of this visa matches the principal visa holder’s duration. Proof of relationship and financial capacity is mandatory.

Entrepreneurs or investors can apply for a Business / Manager Visa, provided they establish or manage a company in Japan with legal registration and sufficient capital (usually ¥5 million or more). It is granted for up to 5 years and is renewable.

Lastly, Japan’s Designated Activities Visa covers special cases such as long-term sightseeing stays (6–12 months), digital nomad residency, or other government-approved categories. However, Nepali citizens’ eligibility under this type is still limited and must be confirmed with the Japanese Embassy or Immigration Bureau.

All long-term visa holders must respect Japan’s immigration laws and renew their residence status before expiry. Extensions depend on employment status, academic performance, and financial stability.
