Japan Skilled Worker Visa (SSW) Program — Opportunities for Nepalis

Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW / 特定技能) visa program is one of the most significant pathways for Nepali citizens seeking long-term employment opportunities abroad. Introduced in April 2019, this visa category was created by the Government of Japan to address severe labor shortages in key industries by bringing in qualified and semi-skilled foreign workers. The SSW program is divided into two categories — SSW Type I and SSW Type II — each offering different levels of rights and duration of stay.

Under SSW Type I, Nepali citizens can work in 16 designated sectors, including nursing care, agriculture, construction, industrial machinery, food and beverage production, shipbuilding, automobile maintenance, aviation, accommodation, cleaning management, and hospitality. To qualify, applicants must pass two mandatory exams — the Japanese language test (JLPT N4 level or JFT-Basic) and the skills test specific to the chosen sector. Those who have completed Technical Intern Training (TITP Level II) in Japan may be exempted from the skills exam, as their prior experience is recognized under the new system. The maximum duration of stay under SSW Type I is five years, renewable annually, but holders of this visa cannot bring their family members to Japan.

After gaining sufficient experience and passing advanced skill evaluations, workers can apply for SSW Type II, which allows long-term residency, the possibility to invite family members, and multiple renewals. However, Type II is currently available only in limited sectors such as construction and shipbuilding, where Japan faces the most acute labor shortages. The SSW visa is an employment-based status, meaning that the applicant must have a valid job offer from a registered Japanese employer who guarantees fair pay, housing support, and proper labor conditions as mandated by Japan’s Labor Standards Act.

The SSW program is especially appealing to Nepali workers because it does not necessarily require a university degree — instead, it focuses on skills, discipline, and basic Japanese language proficiency. It provides an opportunity to legally live and work in Japan while earning a stable income, usually ranging between ¥200,000 to ¥300,000 per month (NPR 180,000–270,000). The Japanese government ensures that all foreign employees under this scheme receive equal treatment in terms of wages and workplace safety.

For Nepalis, this program opens the door to one of the world’s most advanced economies with a growing need for foreign labor. Many Nepalese recruitment agencies and training centers, in coordination with Japan’s Ministry of Justice and Immigration Bureau, provide preparatory courses for the language and skill tests. Successful candidates not only gain international exposure but also lay the foundation for possible permanent residence or long-term visa conversion in Japan.

Applicants are advised to process their SSW visa only through licensed recruiters and verified employers to avoid fraudulent intermediaries. Proper documentation — including the job contract, language and skill certificates, medical report, and clean criminal record — is essential for approval.
