Medical Equipment Imports Up 9%: Healthcare Industry Demands in Nepal 2025

Nepal’s imports of medical equipment and tools rose by 9% in the first month of 2025/26, totaling Rs. 1.28 billioncompared to Rs. 1.18 billion in the same period last year. With medical equipment holding nearly 0.9% of total imports, the growth highlights Nepal’s increasing demand for advanced healthcare facilities and technology-driven treatment options.
Experts say the surge is directly linked to the expansion of private hospitals, diagnostic centers, and specialized clinicsacross major cities. The growing middle class is seeking better healthcare, and medical institutions are investing in modern tools like imaging machines, surgical devices, laboratory equipment, and monitoring systems. At the same time, the rising prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer has boosted demand for diagnostic and treatment equipment.
Another factor is the government’s gradual push toward upgrading healthcare infrastructure. With public hospitals under pressure, imports of essential equipment for surgery, intensive care, and emergency response have risen. International aid and partnerships have also introduced new technology, raising standards of care.
However, experts caution that Nepal’s heavy reliance on imported medical equipment makes the sector vulnerable to high costs, foreign exchange pressure, and supply disruptions. Without stronger local manufacturing or assembly capacity, the healthcare industry will remain dependent on imports for even basic tools.
