Silverware and Jewellery Exports Drop 35.9% Despite Previous Growth

Nepal’s silverware and jewellery exports fell sharply by 35.9% in FY 2025/26, reversing the momentum of past years. Export earnings dropped to Rs. 1.15 billion, compared to Rs. 1.79 billion in 2024/25, signaling a significant setback for one of Nepal’s traditional value-added export industries.
The decline is linked to global demand fluctuations, rising competition from machine-crafted jewellery in India and China, and higher domestic production costs. Many small-scale artisans have also struggled to keep pace with international quality standards and shifting consumer preferences toward modern designs.
Despite the fall, Nepal’s silverware and jewellery retain a cultural and artisanal appeal in niche markets such as Europe and North America, where handcrafted designs are valued. Experts suggest that to regain competitiveness, Nepal must strengthen hallmarking and certification systems, promote e-commerce platforms, and invest in design innovationthat blends tradition with modern trends.
