Thailand Airport Transit Visa for Nepali Citizens — When Is It Needed?

A Thailand Airport Transit Visa (TS) is needed if a Nepali traveler’s layover exceeds 12 hours, involves airport transfer, or requires exiting the international transit area. Those staying in the transit zone for less than 12 hours with a confirmed connecting flight usually do not need a visa. Required documents include a passport, flight ticket, financial proof, and visa for the next destination. Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd. assists travelers in identifying visa needs and handling embassy procedures.

Thailand Airport Transit Visa for Nepali Citizens — When Is It Needed?

For Nepali travelers flying through Thailand on their way to a third country, understanding when a Thailand Airport Transit Visa is required is essential. The visa type applicable for such cases is known as the Transit Visa (TS), and it applies to travelers who need to pass through Thai immigration during a layover or who remain in the country for a short time between flights. However, in most cases, Nepali travelers who are merely transiting through Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok) or Don Mueang Airport do not need a transit visa — provided that they remain within the international transit area, have a confirmed onward flight, and their layover does not exceed 12 hours.

If your connecting flight departs from the same airport and you are not required to leave the airside (international) area, you can stay within the transit zone without a visa. Airlines like Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates typically provide through check-in services, meaning your baggage is transferred automatically to your next flight. However, if you are flying with separate tickets (for example, entering Thailand on one airline and leaving on another that requires you to check in again), or if you need to change airports, you will need to go through immigration — in which case, a Thailand Transit Visa is mandatory.

A transit visa is also required if your transit time exceeds 12 hours or if you wish to leave the airport terminal to stay in a nearby hotel. In such cases, you must apply for the visa in advance at the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu. The transit visa allows travelers to enter Thailand temporarily and is valid for up to 90 days from the date of issue, permitting a stay of up to 30 days within the country. The visa is especially useful for passengers connecting to distant destinations like Japan, Australia, or South Korea, where flight schedules often result in long layovers in Bangkok.

To apply for a Thailand Transit Visa (TS), Nepali citizens must prepare several documents, including a valid passport (at least 6 months’ validity), completed visa application form, two passport-sized photos, a confirmed onward flight ticket, proof of sufficient funds (minimum THB 10,000 for single travelers and THB 20,000 for families), and a valid visa for the destination country if applicable. The visa fee must be paid via Manager’s Chequein favor of “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu” through Global IME Bank. It usually takes 5 to 7 working days for processing.

The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu, advises that travelers with long transits or multi-ticket itineraries apply early to avoid delays. Importantly, even if your transit time is under 12 hours, airlines may still request a transit visa if your baggage needs to be collected or if your connecting flight departs from another airport. Therefore, it is crucial to confirm visa requirements with both your airline and Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., which provides professional visa assistance for Nepali travelers.

Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., Nepal’s trusted travel and visa assistance agency, helps travelers determine whether a Thailand Transit Visa is required, assists with documentation, and coordinates with the Thai Embassy. The company ensures a smooth transit experience for travelers flying to destinations like Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Australia, and Europe via Bangkok.
