Thailand Long-Stay Family Visa — Living with Thai Spouse or Parents

The Thailand Long-Stay Family Visa, officially categorized under the Non-Immigrant “O” Visa, is the best option for Nepali citizens who are married to Thai nationals or have parents legally residing in Thailand. This visa allows family members of Thai citizens or foreign residents to stay in Thailand for an extended period and live together as a family. It is primarily intended for spouses, dependent children, or parents who want to stay in Thailand for more than 90 days and can be renewed annually without leaving the country.

The process usually begins with obtaining a 90-day visa from the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu or through the Thailand e-Visa system (www.thaievisa.go.th). Once in Thailand, the applicant can apply for a one-year visa extension at the Thai Immigration Bureau if they meet all eligibility and financial requirements. The extension can then be renewed every year, allowing continuous residence in Thailand with Thai family members.

To qualify for this visa, the applicant must prove a genuine family relationship. For spouses, an official marriage certificate issued by the Government of Nepal, translated into English, and authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is mandatory. For children, a birth certificate confirming the relationship with the Thai parent is required, and for parents of Thai citizens, the child’s Thai ID card and house registration (Tabien Baan) must be provided.

Applicants also need to demonstrate financial stability. The Thai government requires either a bank balance of THB 400,000 (approximately NPR 2.3 million) or a monthly income of THB 40,000. This proof can come from a personal bank statement or an income certificate verified by the embassy. Other essential documents include a valid passport, two passport-size photos, visa application form, Thai ID or passport of the sponsor, accommodation proof (hotel booking or residence confirmation), and police clearance for long-term stay applicants.

The visa fee for the Thailand Long-Stay Family Visa is THB 2,000 for a single entry and THB 5,000 for multiple entries, payable through a Manager’s Cheque made in favor of “The Royal Thai Embassy, Kathmandu” via Global IME Bank. The embassy does not accept cash or online payments. The typical processing time ranges from 7 to 10 working days, depending on document verification and embassy workload.

After the applicant arrives in Thailand, they must visit the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok (Chaeng Watthana Office) or their local immigration branch to extend their visa for one year. The extension remains valid as long as the relationship and financial requirements are maintained. The visa holder must also report their current address every 90 days to immigration authorities.

It’s important to note that this visa does not automatically allow employment. Anyone wishing to work must obtain a separate Work Permit from the Department of Employment. Overstaying or failing to comply with 90-day reporting rules may result in fines or visa cancellation.

For hassle-free processing, Yatra For Fun Pvt. Ltd., Nepal’s most trusted travel and visa assistance company, offers complete support in preparing the long-stay visa file. The team helps with document translation, financial verification, Manager’s Cheque preparation, and coordination with the Thai Embassy.
