Thailand Visit Visa Extension Process for Nepali Visitors

For Nepali travelers visiting Thailand under a Tourist Visa or Family Visit Visa (Non-Immigrant “O”), it’s common to want more time to explore, meet family, or handle personal matters beyond the original visa duration. The good news is that Thailand allows visa extensions for short-term visitors under specific conditions. The extension process is simple if done correctly, and it must be completed before your current visa expires to avoid overstay penalties.

Eligibility and Types of Visit Visa Extensions

There are two main categories for Nepali citizens seeking to extend their stay in Thailand:

  1. Tourist Visa Extension: For travelers entering on a 60-day tourist visa (or 30-day visa exemption for other nationalities). Nepali citizens typically hold a Single Entry Tourist Visa, valid for 60 days, which can be extended for an additional 30 days at the Thai Immigration Bureau.

  2. Family Visit Visa Extension: For those holding a Non-Immigrant “O” Visa (Family Visit), the stay can initially be 90 days and may be extended up to one year if valid family ties, financial proof, and sponsor documents are presented.

Where to Apply for Visa Extension

All visa extensions must be submitted in person at the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok or any regional Immigration Office near your place of residence or stay. The main office for most visitors is:
Immigration Bureau, Chaeng Watthana, Bangkok (Government Complex Building B, 2nd Floor, Room 201, Chaeng Watthana Soi 7).
Working Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (closed on public holidays).

Documents Required for Visa Extension (Tourist or Family Visit)

When visiting the Immigration Bureau, Nepali applicants must bring the following:

  • Original passport with valid visa and copies of the photo, entry stamp, and visa page.

  • Completed TM.7 Form (available at Immigration or downloadable online).

  • 1 passport-sized photo (4×6 cm).

  • Visa extension fee: THB 1,900 for tourist visa holders, payable in cash.

  • Proof of accommodation in Thailand (hotel booking, rental agreement, or invitation letter).

  • Copy of departure/return flight ticket (for tourist visa).

  • Financial proof (bank statement or sponsor letter showing sufficient funds).

  • For Family Visit extensions: Marriage certificate or birth certificate, and Thai ID card or visa of the sponsor.

After submitting the documents, you’ll receive a queue number. The officer may ask basic questions about your reason for staying longer. Once approved, your passport will be stamped with a new permitted stay date. The 30-day extension for Tourist Visa is typically granted on the same day, while Family Visit Visa extensions may take several working days for verification.

Important Rules & Tips

  • Always apply at least 5–7 days before visa expiry.

  • Keep photocopies of all documents for your records.

  • Do not overstay — a fine of THB 500 per day (up to THB 20,000) applies for overstaying.

  • Extensions are not guaranteed; approval is at the discretion of Thai immigration officers.

  • Once extended, if you wish to leave Thailand and return, you must apply for a Re-Entry Permit (THB 1,000 for single, THB 3,800 for multiple) before departure to avoid visa cancellation.
