Thailand Work Visa for Nepali Professionals — Process & Permits

For Nepali professionals planning to work in Thailand, obtaining the right visa and permit is essential to ensure legal employment. The Thai government has set a two-step process for foreign workers — first, applying for a Non-Immigrant “B” Visa (Business/Employment), and then obtaining a Thai Work Permit through the Ministry of Labour. These two documents together grant legal authorization to work and reside in Thailand for professional or business purposes.

The first step begins with the Non-Immigrant “B” Visa, which is issued to foreign nationals who have secured a job offer, employment contract, or business assignment in Thailand. Nepali applicants must have an official invitation or employment letter from a Thai company registered under Thai law. This visa is usually granted as a single-entry visa valid for 90 days, during which the applicant must enter Thailand and apply for a work permit. The required documents include a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), visa application form, passport-sized photos, employment contract, and supporting company documents such as registration certificates, tax ID, and shareholder details. In addition, financial proof showing at least THB 20,000 (single applicant) or THB 40,000 (family) is necessary, along with a police clearance certificate and medical check-up report if requested by the embassy.

After obtaining the Non-Immigrant B Visa from the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu, the applicant can travel to Thailand and start the process of acquiring a Work Permit. Within the first few weeks of arrival, the Thai employer must submit the work permit application to the Department of Employment under the Ministry of Labour. The company employing the Nepali professional must be legally registered and meet minimum requirements such as 2 million baht in paid-up capital per foreign employee, and employ at least four Thai nationals per foreign worker. However, companies promoted by the Board of Investment (BOI) may receive special privileges, including faster processing and relaxed conditions.

To apply for a work permit, Nepali professionals must submit their passport, Non-Immigrant B visa copy, educational certificates translated into English or Thai, professional credentials, employment contract, company documents, and a medical certificate issued in Thailand. The entire application is reviewed by the labour department, and once approved, the Work Permit is issued for one year. The employee can then apply for a visa extension at the Thai Immigration Bureau, which aligns the stay period with the validity of the work permit. The work permit is job-specific and employer-specific, meaning it cannot be used for another company or position without reapplication.

Working in Thailand without a valid work permit is considered illegal and may result in fines, deportation, or a permanent employment ban. The Thai government also maintains a list of restricted professions that foreigners are not allowed to engage in, such as construction labor, agriculture, and certain craft-based trades. Holders of a Thai work visa must report their address to the immigration office every 90 days and must also obtain a re-entry permit if they plan to travel outside Thailand during the visa period. The work permit and visa can be renewed annually as long as the employment contract remains valid and all documents are up to date.
