Tourist arrivals cross 107,000 in April 2026

Nepal recorded the arrival of more than 107,000 international tourists in April 2026, reflecting a steady but uneven recovery in the country’s tourism sector. According to data released by the Nepal Tourism Board, a total of 107,934 foreign visitors entered the country during the month, indicating sustained global interest in Nepal as a travel destination.

A closer look at the regional distribution shows South Asia continuing to dominate Nepal’s tourism inflow. Visitors from SAARC countries accounted for 33,432 arrivals, representing about 31 percent of the total. This underscores Nepal’s strong dependence on neighboring markets, particularly for short-haul and cost-sensitive travel segments. Meanwhile, other Asian countries contributed 26,726 tourists, reflecting a gradual recovery in broader regional mobility.

European markets also remained significant, with 21,988 arrivals recorded in April. Oceania contributed 5,898 visitors, while arrivals from the Americas stood at 2,518. Tourist inflow from West Asia reached 1,697, and African countries accounted for 315 visitors. Additionally, 15,360 tourists arrived from other parts of the world, highlighting a diversified but still evolving market structure.

Country-wise, India retained its position as Nepal’s largest source market, followed by China. Tourist arrivals from China reached 11,722, reinforcing its role as a key growth driver in the post-pandemic tourism landscape. Bangladesh ranked third with 5,231 visitors. The rising share of tourists from multiple regions indicates a gradual shift from heavy reliance on a few countries toward a more diversified tourism base.

Despite the positive momentum, April 2026 figures reflect a decline compared to the same period last year. In April 2025, Nepal welcomed 116,490 tourists, while pre-pandemic levels in April 2019 stood at 109,399. This suggests that while the sector has largely recovered from the pandemic shock, it has yet to achieve consistent year-on-year growth.

Industry observers point to external geopolitical factors as a contributing cause. Escalating tensions in parts of West Asia have disrupted air connectivity and travel routes, indirectly affecting tourist inflows to Nepal. Reduced international promotion activities and global economic uncertainties may have also played a role in dampening travel demand.

The data highlights a broader structural challenge for Nepal’s tourism sector: the need to strengthen resilience against external shocks. Experts emphasize the importance of expanding digital marketing efforts, improving international outreach, and positioning Nepal as a safe and premium destination. Enhancing air connectivity and diversifying tourism products—ranging from adventure and culture to wellness and eco-tourism—are seen as critical steps to sustain long-term growth.

As global travel patterns continue to shift, Nepal’s ability to adapt its tourism strategy will determine whether it can convert its natural and cultural assets into consistent economic gains.
