Transit eVisa to Canada: Requirements for Nepali Travelers

If you are a Nepali citizen traveling to another country and need to transit through Canada, you may need to apply for a Canada Transit eVisa. This visa allows you to pass through Canada’s airport while en route to your final destination. Whether you're changing flights or need to stay in Canada temporarily, the Canada Transit eVisa is a crucial part of your journey. Here’s a detailed guide on the requirements for Nepali travelers applying for a Transit eVisa to Canada.
1. Who Needs a Transit eVisa to Canada?
A Canada Transit eVisa is required for travelers who:
Are traveling through Canada on their way to another country.
Will be transiting through a Canadian airport and will remain within the airport’s international transit area.
However, if you're staying in Canada for less than 48 hours and remain within the airport, the transit visa might not be required if you're from a visa-exempt country. As a Nepali citizen, you are not visa-exempt, so you will need to apply for a Canada Transit eVisa.
2. Passport Requirements
Before applying for a Canada Transit eVisa, make sure your passport meets the following criteria:
Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Canada.
Blank Pages: Ensure that your passport has at least two blank pages for the visa stamp and any other necessary immigration endorsements.
Having a valid and up-to-date passport is essential for smooth processing of your visa.
3. Key Documents for Transit eVisa Application
When applying for a Canada Transit eVisa, you will need to provide several key documents to prove your eligibility. These include:
Covering Letter
Purpose of Travel: A letter explaining that your visit to Canada is only for transit purposes. Mention your destination country and the flight details.
Travel Dates: Specify the exact dates you will be traveling through Canada.
Flight Information: Provide your flight itinerary showing the full journey, including both the flight to and from Canada, and your onward destination.
Proof of Visa for Final Destination
You must provide proof that you have the necessary visa or documents for your final destination. This could include:
A valid visa for the country you are traveling to.
Travel authorization (if applicable).
Flight Details
Confirmed flight reservations: Provide evidence of confirmed flights showing your entry and exit from Canada, with clear details of layovers and connections.
Proof of your onward journey: This ensures that you will not overstay in Canada, as you are only transiting.
Proof of Funds (Optional but Recommended)
While not always required, it’s a good idea to provide evidence of your ability to financially support yourself during the transit period. This could be shown through:
Bank statements from the last 3–6 months.
Proof of income or any financial documents that show you have sufficient funds to cover your stay while in Canada.
4. Application Form
To apply for the Canada Transit eVisa, you will need to fill out the Canada Visa Application Form (IMM 5257). This form asks for personal details, travel history, and information regarding the purpose of your trip. You will also need to complete a short set of questions about your travel and eligibility.
The form is available for online submission via the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. Ensure that all sections are filled out accurately to avoid delays.
5. Pay the Application Fee
Once you’ve filled out the application form, you will need to pay the visa application fee. The fee for the Canada Transit eVisa can be paid online through the IRCC portal using a credit card or debit card. After completing the payment, you will receive a payment receipt, which you should keep for your records.
6. Biometrics Appointment (If Required)
In some cases, you may be required to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photographs) as part of your application. If biometrics are required, you will receive instructions on where and when to provide them at a Visa Application Center (VAC).
7. Submit Your Application
After completing the form and gathering the required documents, you can submit your application online via the IRCC portal. If you choose to submit it through the VAC, make sure you provide physical copies of all required documents.
Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email, and the processing of your visa will begin.
8. Wait for Processing
The processing time for a Canada Transit eVisa can vary. On average, it may take around 10 to 15 business days to process the application. However, this time may vary depending on the volume of applications or if additional documents are required.
Make sure to apply for your transit visa well in advance of your travel to Canada to allow for any delays or complications.
9. Receive Your Transit Visa
Once your application has been processed and approved, you will receive your Canada Transit eVisa either as an electronic document or a visa sticker affixed to your passport, depending on the method of application.
You will need to carry this visa with you when transiting through Canada.
10. Travel to Canada
After receiving your Canada Transit eVisa, make sure you carry all necessary documents when traveling. When you arrive at the Canadian airport, you may be asked to present:
Your passport and Canada Transit eVisa.
Flight details showing your onward journey.
Visa or travel authorization for your final destination (if applicable).
As you’re only transiting, you may not be required to go through a full immigration process if you remain in the international transit area.
