When applying for a Chinese visa from Nepal, two important requirements often determine whether your application is accepted or delayed — the visa photo standard and the fingerprint collection process. These steps are strictly enforced by the Chinese Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu under the supervision of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. Applicants must follow both rules carefully to ensure smooth processing and avoid unnecessary rejections or resubmissions.

1. Visa Photo Requirements

All Nepali applicants are required to upload or submit a recent passport-sized photograph that meets Chinese visa standards. The photo must be taken within the last six months and reflect your current appearance. It must have a white or near-white background, with a clear front-facing view of the entire face and neutral expression. Hats, caps, sunglasses, and uniforms (except for religious attire worn daily) are not permitted.
If your photo does not meet the requirements, the system will reject it during online submission. After three failed upload attempts, applicants are instructed to bring a physical copy of a compliant photograph to the Visa Centre, where staff will upload it manually. The Visa Centre will not accept photos that have been digitally altered, contain shadows, or show an incorrect background color. Using another person’s image (even by mistake) will lead to rejection, and you will need to complete a new visa application form.

2. Fingerprint Collection Policy

Since 2020, the Chinese Embassy has implemented a biometric data collection policy for all regular visa applicants. Fingerprint collection is mandatory for individuals between the ages of 14 and 70. Children under 14 and seniors over 70 are exempt from fingerprint submission. All applicants within the required age range must appear in person at the Visa Centre in Kathmandu for fingerprint capture.
Applicants using a travel agency, such as Yatra for Fun Pvt. Ltd., will still be required to personally visit the Visa Centre on the scheduled appointment day for this step. The agency, however, can assist with document verification, online form completion, and scheduling the appointment. If fingerprints are not properly recorded, the visa cannot be issued. The collected biometric data is stored securely by Chinese authorities for verification purposes.

3. Additional Rules and Tips

  • If your fingerprint data was recorded in a previous visa application within the past five years and you are using the same passport, the Embassy may waive re-collection at its discretion.

  • Applicants submitting through postal or third-party services are not allowed to skip the fingerprint procedure unless officially exempted.

  • Make sure your hands are clean, dry, and free from cuts or injuries during biometric submission to ensure accurate scanning.

  • Fingerprint collection must be completed before the visa officer can begin processing your application.
