The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a special assistance package for its developing member countries to help them tackle the economic and financial challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The package aims to manage immediate economic pressures and strengthen the long-term resilience of these economies. ADB President Masato Kanda stated that the package would provide rapid budgetary support and ensure the import of essential goods. Financial measures will also be made available to facilitate trade and supply chains, particularly to address the sharp rise in fuel prices.According to ADB, disruptions in transportation routes due to tensions in the Middle East have increased both costs and delivery times, affecting not only the energy sector but also industrial raw materials, petrochemicals, and fertilizers. This could potentially create serious crises in agriculture and food production. Additionally, countries dependent on tourism and remittances are facing added pressure on inflation and foreign currency reserves.In response to these challenges, the bank will offer concessional loans through its Countercyclical Support Facility, helping governments reduce fiscal deficits and mitigate the impact on vulnerable populations. President Kanda also emphasized that discussions have already begun with the most severely affected member countries to provide immediate assistance. The 69-member multilateral development bank is committed to working with the private sector and other development partners to provide integrated support to protect the poor and at-risk communities.
