Bagmati Leads in GDP Contribution, Gandaki Tops in Growth Rate

For the fiscal year 2081/82 (2024/25), Nepal's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at consumer prices is estimated to reach approximately NPR 6.1 trillion, with Bagmati Province contributing the highest share, according to a preliminary report released by the National Statistics Office.

Provincial GDP Contribution Breakdown:

  • Bagmati: 36.52% (Highest)

  • Koshi: 15.90%

  • Lumbini: 14.23%

  • Madhesh: 13.16%

  • Gandaki: 8.98%

  • Sudurpaschim: 7.03%

  • Karnali: 4.19% (Lowest)

Compared to the revised estimates of the previous fiscal year (2080/81), the provincial contribution has changed marginally. Bagmati and Madhesh have shown slight growth in contribution, while Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim have experienced a minor decline.

Provincial Economic Growth Rates: Gandaki Leads, Sudurpaschim Trails

According to preliminary estimates based on consumer prices:

  • Gandaki Province shows the highest GDP growth rate at 5.51%

  • Bagmati Province follows with 5.18%

  • Sudurpaschim Province has the lowest growth at 3.32%

The national average growth rate stands at 4.61%. Provinces performing above average include Gandaki, Bagmati, Karnali, and Lumbini, while Koshi, Madhesh, and Sudurpaschim fall below the national average.

Three-Year Growth Trend and Regional Imbalance

From fiscal year 2079/80 to 2081/82, GDP growth has gradually improved across all provinces. However, Karnali and Sudurpaschim continue to show slower growth momentum, indicating persistent regional disparities in economic development. The Statistics Office emphasizes the need for balanced and inclusive policy planning to address these inequalities.

Per Capita GDP: Bagmati Highest, Madhesh Lowest

Preliminary estimates of per capita GDP in USD for FY 2081/82 are:

  • Bagmati: $2,602

  • Gandaki: $1,619

  • Koshi: $1,401

  • Lumbini: $1,201

  • Sudurpaschim: $1,153

  • Karnali: $1,089

  • Madhesh: $932 (Lowest)

The national per capita GDP is projected at $1,496. Only Bagmati and Gandaki are above this average, while the remaining five provinces fall below it.
