Canada have made history at FIFA World Cup 2026, advancing to the Round of 16 for the very first time. Captain Stephen Eustaquio's powerful strike in the second minute of injury time proved to be the difference as Canada edged South Africa 1–0 in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The match remained goalless through 90 minutes with both sides creating chances but failing to convert. South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a string of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest, while defender Aubrey Modiba cleared a Moise Bombito header off the line to deny Canada.

The introduction of star winger Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute injected fresh energy into Canada's attack. The pressure finally paid off in injury time when Eustaquio met a bouncing ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a fierce effort into the net, sending Canadian fans into wild celebrations. The skipper was named Player of the Match for his heroic performance.

Canada, appearing at the World Cup for only the third time, had never previously gone beyond the group stage. They will now face the winner of the Netherlands versus Morocco clash in the quarterfinal.

Despite the defeat, South Africa had already written their own chapter in history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. Their coach Hugo Broos, aged 74, became the oldest manager ever to lead a team in the World Cup knockout rounds, surpassing the record previously held by Uruguay's Oscar Tabarez set in 2018.
