Kathmandu — Commercial banks in Nepal have announced a further reduction in deposit interest rates for the upcoming month of Kartik. This continued downward trend is heavily driven by excess loanable funds (liquidity) piling up in the banking system, coupled with a sluggish demand for new credit.
According to the new rate schedules published by all 20 operating commercial banks, the average maximum interest rate for individual fixed deposits has dropped to 4.013 percent, down from 4.0895 percent in the previous month of Ashwin. Similarly, the average rate for institutional deposits has decreased from 3.0665 percent to 3.003 percent.
Nepal Investment Mega Bank implemented the steepest cuts this month, slashing its individual deposit rate by 0.8 percentage points to 3.7 percent and its institutional rate to 3 percent. Nabil Bank followed suit, lowering its individual rate to 3.75 percent and its institutional rate to 2.75 percent. Prabhu, Nepal SBI, Standard Chartered, and Kumari banks also made slight downward revisions, while Himalayan Bank chose to lower only its institutional rate.
In contrast, Everest Bank was the only institution to raise its individual deposit rate, bumping it up by 0.25 percentage points to 3.75 percent. Meanwhile, a majority of the lenders—13 banks in total, including Sanima, NMB, and Machhapuchhre, which continue to offer the highest rate at 4.5 percent—opted to keep their interest rates completely unchanged from the previous month.
