Excel Development Bank Limited reported a net profit of Rs 309.4 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2082/83, marking a dramatic recovery from just Rs 1.35 million in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
The sharp increase in profit was driven mainly by improved loan recovery. The bank had recorded an impairment charge of Rs 172.6 million in the previous year. In the latest fiscal year, however, it reversed Rs 194.2 million in loan-loss provisions, significantly lifting both operating and net profit.
The bank’s net interest income increased by 14.72 percent to Rs 648.8 million from Rs 565.5 million a year earlier. Operating profit also rose sharply, reaching Rs 539.5 million compared with Rs 112.1 million in the previous fiscal year.
The bank returned to a dividend-paying position after reporting negative distributable profit in the previous year. Following regulatory adjustments and the settlement of accumulated losses, total distributable profit stood at Rs 179.7 million as of mid-July. Distributable profit per share reached Rs 14.38, opening the possibility of a dividend for shareholders, subject to regulatory approval and the bank’s final decision.
Customer deposits increased by 12.63 percent to Rs 18.58 billion from Rs 16.49 billion. Loans and advances rose by 8.82 percent to Rs 13.18 billion from Rs 12.11 billion. As deposits grew faster than lending, the bank appears to have strengthened its liquidity position, although slower credit expansion could limit interest income growth if the trend continues.
The bank has paid-up capital of Rs 1.25 billion. Its combined reserves, retained earnings, share premium and other funds reached Rs 972.9 million. Total assets expanded from Rs 18.98 billion to more than Rs 21.32 billion during the review period.
Overall, the latest financial results show improvements in core interest income, loan recovery and dividend capacity. However, a substantial portion of the profit increase came from the reversal of earlier loan-loss provisions. Sustaining the same level of profitability will therefore depend on stronger recurring income, continued asset-quality improvement and disciplined credit expansion.
