Kathmandu — Global Money Week 2026 has officially begun under the theme “Smart Money Talks,” marking the fourteenth edition of the week-long campaign observed every March. The initiative aims to promote financial literacy among adolescents and youth, encouraging better understanding of money management from an early age.On the opening day, Nepal Rastra Bank, in collaboration with the Insurance Authority, Securities Board of Nepal, and the Department of Cooperatives, organized a launch event in Kathmandu. Around 500 students from Grades 8 to 10 representing various schools participated in the program, highlighting efforts to integrate financial awareness at the school level.Inaugurating the event, Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, Prof. Dr. Bishwanath Poudel, emphasized the importance of financial education beginning at home. He stated that individuals, regardless of their profession, must understand how to earn, save, and properly utilize money, stressing that responsible financial behavior is essential for long-term economic well-being.Delivering the welcome remarks, Executive Director Dayaram Sharma Poudel noted that the program was designed to educate students about effective money management from an early stage. He expressed confidence that such initiatives would contribute to enhancing both financial literacy and financial inclusion in Nepal.The second session featured a panel discussion involving senior officials from key regulatory institutions, including Nepal Rastra Bank, the Securities Board, the Insurance Authority, the Department of Cooperatives, and the Nepal Bankers’ Association. The participants provided insights into their respective sectors and addressed questions from students, fostering interactive learning. The session was facilitated by Shikha Adhikari Regmi, Acting Director of the Financial Inclusion and Consumer Protection Department at Nepal Rastra Bank.A quiz competition on financial literacy was also organized among participating students, offering them an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a practical setting.The campaign will run until Chaitra 8, during which various awareness programs will be conducted nationwide. Banks and financial institutions, payment service providers, remittance companies, and other stakeholders are set to organize youth-focused activities aimed at expanding financial knowledge.Planned activities include interactive sessions, competitions, audiovisual content dissemination, and exposure visits to financial institutions, covering topics such as banking, capital markets, insurance, and cooperatives.Global Money Week is a worldwide initiative launched in 2012 to promote financial education among young people. Nepal has been participating since 2013 under the coordination of Nepal Rastra Bank. To date, the campaign has reached over 70 million children and youth across 176 countries, underscoring its global impact in building financial awareness.
