Government Launching Nationwide Campaign Against Market Irregularities

The government is set to launch a nationwide special campaign from Monday aimed at controlling market irregularities, artificial price hikes, and consumer fraud. The initiative, titled “Price Transparency Week,” is being introduced jointly by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.

According to the government, the campaign is intended to make the pricing of goods and services more transparent, ensure consumers are informed about actual market prices, and increase accountability among traders and service providers. Authorities say complaints have been rising over inconsistent pricing, the absence of price lists in shops, and consumers being charged unfair rates for goods and services.

Dipaa Dahal, Press and Research Advisor to Prime Minister Balen Shah, said the campaign has been designed to address issues directly affecting the daily lives of ordinary citizens. She expressed confidence that the week-long drive would play an important role in discouraging unfair market practices and strengthening consumer protection.

Dahal also urged all concerned agencies, civil society groups, and media organizations to actively support the campaign by monitoring and reporting market irregularities. According to her, public participation and media oversight will be crucial in making the campaign effective.

The government stated that the campaign will continue until Jestha 3. Following a decision by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, the Prime Minister’s Office has already directed relevant agencies across the country to begin implementation preparations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, provincial chief ministers’ offices, and local governments have all been assigned responsibilities under the campaign. Local governments will be required to ensure that businesses and service providers within their jurisdictions display mandatory price lists and comply with regular inspections.

District Administration Offices have been instructed to activate district-level market monitoring committees, conduct awareness campaigns on price transparency, and strengthen market regulation measures.

Similarly, central and provincial market monitoring committees will evaluate market conditions, mobilize inspection teams, and initiate legal action against traders or businesses found violating regulations.

The government said the campaign has become necessary due to growing public complaints about inconsistent pricing and increasing cases of consumers being misled in the market. Officials believe the initiative will help create greater transparency in the pricing system, improve accountability among businesses, and strengthen enforcement mechanisms against unfair trade practices.
