Government to Scrutinize Candidates Before Appointing SEBON and Insurance Authority Chiefs
The government appears more cautious than ever in selecting leadership for its key regulatory bodies. Finance Minister Dr. Swarnima Wagle has made it clear that appointments to the Nepal Securities Board (SEBON) and the Insurance Authority will only be finalized after a thorough examination of each candidate's background, past conduct, and professional associations.
Speaking at an interaction program organized by the Nepal Chamber of Commerce in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Minister Wagle confirmed that a candidate for the chairmanship of SEBON has already been shortlisted. However, he stressed that a formal announcement would not be made until the necessary evaluation process is fully completed.
Turning to broader economic reforms, the Finance Minister emphasized that the government views the private sector as the primary partner in driving the national economy forward. He highlighted several concrete steps already taken in this direction — including a tax exemption on income up to Rs. 1 million, efforts to make the electricity sector's tax structure more consumer-friendly, and an accelerated push toward digital service delivery across government institutions.
Reaffirming the government's commitment to building transparent and intermediary-free public institutions, Minister Wagle was direct in his assessment. Without the energy and active participation of the private sector, he said, the economy simply cannot achieve the momentum the country needs. He further assured the business community that concerns raised by entrepreneurs are being taken seriously and that the government would pursue every possible avenue to address them.
