KATHMANDU — Nepal’s economic expansion is set to remain sluggish over the next two years, staying below the 4 percent mark, according to the latest World Economic Outlook report released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The global lender estimates Nepal's GDP growth at 3.6 percent in 2026, with only a marginal uptick to 3.7 percent projected for 2027.
The report highlights a volatile inflation trajectory for the domestic economy. Consumer price inflation is expected to ease to 3.1 percent in 2026, down from 4.1 percent in 2025. However, this relief will be short-lived, as inflation is projected to surge to 5.8 percent in 2027. The IMF warns that potential spikes in international petroleum prices and disruptions in global supply chains could hit import-dependent economies like Nepal particularly hard.
On the global front, the IMF forecasts world economic growth to decelerate to 3.1 percent in 2026 from 3.5 percent in 2025, before recovering slightly to 3.4 percent in 2027. While geopolitical conflicts and trade frictions continue to weigh down the global economy, booming investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure have provided crucial support to key markets. However, the IMF cautions that these technological benefits remain unevenly distributed among nations, leaving many developing economies vulnerable to ongoing financial and energy risks.
