Amid rising tensions in West Asia and increasing pressure on foreign currency reserves, India has tightened its policy on silver imports after already imposing stricter measures on gold. According to India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade, 99.9 percent purity silver bars have been moved from the “free” category to the “restricted” category. Other types of silver bars have also been placed under restricted import rules.

Earlier, the Indian government had significantly increased import duties on gold, silver, and platinum. Import duty on gold and silver has been raised from 6 percent to 15 percent, while platinum now faces a 15.4 percent duty. In addition, India has imposed a 100-kilogram import limit on gold under the Advance Authorization Scheme.

The Indian government said the measures are aimed at controlling rising import costs, reducing trade deficits, and limiting the outflow of US dollars. With crude oil prices climbing due to the West Asia crisis, authorities are trying to conserve foreign exchange reserves by discouraging heavy imports of precious metals.
