Jerome Powell Appointed Interim Chair Amid Federal Reserve Leadership Transition
The United States Federal Reserve has appointed Jerome Powell as interim chair during the leadership transition period. The Federal Reserve said Powell will continue to lead the central bank until newly appointed chair Kevin Warsh formally takes the oath of office.
According to a statement published by the Federal Reserve, assigning temporary responsibility to the outgoing chair during the transition process follows long-standing institutional practice. Powell’s second four-year term as Fed chair officially ends on Friday, while Kevin Warsh was confirmed by the US Senate only a few days ago as his successor.
Powell has stressed the importance of maintaining the independence and autonomy of the Federal Reserve, stating that he will remain a member of the Board of Governors until January 2028. In recent months, Powell had also faced scrutiny over alleged irregularities linked to renovation work at the Fed’s Washington headquarters. The matter was later transferred to the Federal Reserve’s Inspector General for further review.
