काठमाडौँमा अवैध रूपमा क्रिप्टो करेन्सीको कारोबार गरेको आरोपमा एक व्यक्ति पक्राउ परेका छन्। काठमाडौँ महानगरपालिका–१५ डल्लु बस्दै आएका मोहम्मद सेफलाई प्रहरीले विशेष सूचनाको आधारमा नियन्त्रणमा लिएको हो। जिल्ला प्रहरी परिसर काठमाडौँका सूचना अधिकारी पवनकुमार भट्टराईका अनुसार, बारा कलैया नगरपालिका घर भएका सेफ काठमाडौँमा बस्दै क्रिप्टो कारोबारमा संलग्न रहेको प्रारम्भिक अनुसन्धानले देखाएको छ।
प्रहरीले सेफको साथबाट विभिन्न कम्पनीका दुई थान मोबाइलसमेत बरामद गरेको छ। ती मोबाइलमार्फत ठूलो परिमाणमा अभौतिक मुद्राको कारोबार गरिएको आशंका रहेको प्रहरीले जनाएको छ। नियन्त्रणमा लिएपछि गरिएको प्राथमिक अनुसन्धानमा १९ करोड ८१ लाख रुपैयाँभन्दा बढी बराबरको डिजिटल कारोबार भएको तथ्य बाहिरिएको छ।
देशमा अभौतिक मुद्रा (क्रिप्टो करेन्सी) को प्रयोग तथा कारोबार कानूनी रूपमा निषेधित छ। यही आधारमा सेफविरुद्ध अभौतिक मुद्राको अवैध प्रयोगसम्बन्धी कसुरमा मुद्दा दर्ता गरिएको प्रहरीले जनाएको छ। थप अनुसन्धान अघि बढाउन काठमाडौँ जिल्ला अदालतबाट पाँच दिनको म्याद अनुमति लिइएको अधिकारी भट्टराईले जानकारी दिए।
प्रहरीका अनुसार हाल पनि डिजिटल माध्यममार्फत हुने गैरकानूनी कारोबार रोक्न निगरानी कडा बनाइएको छ। पछिल्ला महिनाँमा क्रिप्टो कारोबारमा संलग्न रहेको आरोपमा पक्राउ पर्नेको संख्या बढ्दो अवस्थामा छ, जसले नियमन र प्रविधि–निगरानी थप चुनौतीपूर्ण बनेको प्रहरी अधिकारीहरूको भनाइ छ।
A man has been arrested in Kathmandu for allegedly conducting illegal cryptocurrency transactions, according to Nepal Police. Mohammad Saif, a resident of Kalaiya Municipality in Bara district and currently living in Dallu, Kathmandu Metropolitan City–15, was taken into custody following a special tip-off. Kathmandu District Police Range spokesperson Pawan Kumar Bhattarai confirmed that Saif had been operating crypto-related activities from his residence in the capital.
Police seized two mobile phones used for conducting transactions through various digital platforms. Preliminary investigations revealed that Saif had carried out more than NPR 198.1 million (over 19 crore 81 lakh) worth of cryptocurrency transactions using those devices. Authorities believe he had been actively involved in large-scale virtual currency trading despite Nepal’s legal restrictions.
Cryptocurrency trading, use, and promotion are banned in Nepal, and those found engaging in such activities can be prosecuted under existing cyber and financial laws. Following the arrest, police sought additional time for deeper investigation, and the Kathmandu District Court granted a five-day extension to continue the probe.
According to police officials, surveillance against illegal digital and financial activities has been intensified. They noted that arrests connected to cryptocurrency transactions have increased in recent months, underscoring growing challenges in monitoring and regulating emerging online financial channels.
