Kathmandu — Muktinath Development Bank earned a net profit of Rs 1.51 billion in the fiscal year 2082/83, up 12.44 percent from Rs 1.35 billion in the previous fiscal year.
Despite the increase in profit, the bank’s asset quality weakened significantly. Its non-performing loan ratio rose to 4.77 percent from 2.97 percent a year earlier, indicating growing pressure on loan recovery and credit quality.
The bank’s net interest income increased by 3.63 percent to Rs 4.74 billion. At the same time, impairment charges for possible loan losses declined to Rs 572.3 million from Rs 793.5 million, helping support the rise in profit.
Deposit growth remained stronger than credit expansion. Customer deposits increased by 5.20 percent, while loans and advances grew by only 2.55 percent. The bank collected around Rs 123 billion in deposits, while loans and advances remained above Rs 100 billion.
The slower pace of lending compared with deposit mobilisation suggests that the bank is facing challenges in deploying available funds into productive credit. Weak loan demand and excess liquidity in the banking system have also limited opportunities for business expansion.
The bank’s reserve fund increased by 25.26 percent to Rs 4.27 billion. Distributable profit stood at Rs 675.7 million, while its dividend-paying capacity was reported at 8.45 percent.
Earnings per share stood at Rs 18.98, while net worth per share reached Rs 161.82. Although profitability and capital-related indicators improved, the sharp increase in non-performing loans remains a major concern for future earnings.
The bank has identified weak economic activity, slower credit demand and difficulties in loan recovery as key challenges. Its performance in the coming year will largely depend on how effectively it controls bad loans, improves recovery and deploys its growing deposit base into quality lending.
